Worried mom

by Gina
(Oklahoma)

My son is 16 and has severe acne.(neither of his sisters, one being his twin have this problem) It is very hard on him he has started scrubbing his acne extremly hard and is not only damaging his skin but leaving horrible rashes. I have taken him to the dermatoligist and the stuff she recommended for him did not really seem to help. I can not afford to go back to the dermatoligist. We have tried clearisil, oxy, proactiv, and many other over the counter and mail in products. His acne seems to get worse instead of better. Is this just due to the fact that he is so stressed about it? Now he has scrubbed his face so hard that he has a rash on his chin that looks like a hickey. Does anyone know what can be done?

Severe teen acne
by: Raffaella

Scrubbing aggravates existing outbreaks.
Be sure to let your son know this and point out some ways to avoid putting pressure on these areas. Wearing a sweatband or a beloved old baseball cap or just resting the chin in the hands while gazing at the blackboard can make pimples worse.Scrubbing make acne worse by irritating the skin.

Don't pick or squeeze pimples and avoid hard scrubbing. Acne is not the result of poor hygiene, so gentle cleansing is all that's needed. Remember, too much pressure on pimples just makes the problem worse.

Stress causes worsening of acne in two ways. First, by stimulating adrenal glands to produce more hormones and secondly, by slowing down the healing process.

Stress raises the levels of the hormone testosterone, which in turn increases the activity of the oil glands.

Over the counter remedies can be of limited use for severe acne Acne, so be realistic with your expectations.

Have your son been treated with Differin, Retin A, or oral antibiotics?

These treatments will not work overnight and, in fact, the acne may worsen for 2 weeks before it gets better. If the boy understands this explanation and trusts in the care provided, he may succeed in getting the long-term benefits of the topical retinoid (tretinoin [Retin-A] or adapalene [Differin]). If use of a single agent does not lead to a good response, coupling the use of a retinoid with benzoyl peroxide or with azelaic acid can have a synergistic effect.

Therefore, it is reasonable to prescribe an oral antibiotic to reduce the overgrowth of Propionibacterium acnes.

Oral antibiotics for acne include tetracycline, doxycycline, minocycline, and erythromycin. Benzamycin, a topical gel that contains benzoyl peroxide and erythromycin, can be prescribed.

When this therapy did not work adequately, a topical retinoid can be added to the treatment regimen.

If these medications do not produce adequate results within 6 months, i highly suggest consulting an MD about this. Hi can offer Accutane which does have some side effects but short term may be able to clear him up and then be placed on some topical medications.

Dont wait and remeber: severe acne almost always leave a scar.
