Permanent acne scars usually look like indentations in the skin.
They may be small or large, deep or shallow.
Deep acne scars may require several procedures or a few different types of therapy for great results.

This type of scarring is a result of tissue loss from deep, nodular acne. At the first sign of this type of acne, consult a dermatologist for prompt treatment to minimize damage and scarring on the skin.
Topical, over the counter skin care products make little difference in severe scarring cases where there is tissue loss.

Deep acne scarring may require surgical techniques that remove scar tissue, dermabrasion, or temporary or permanent dermal fillers or fat injections to smooth pits and depressions.

Surgical excisions can be performed on small, well-defined, deep acne scars and can give fairly satisfactory results. It is carried out using a small punch biopsy tool which has a circular blade of varying widths. Local anaesthesia is applied to the area.

Often, the best treatment of severe lesions is only a combination of subcision and small-volume fat transfer, acne laser treatment, dermabrasion, and excision or grafting.
