Sulfur for acne: a great treatment!

Sulfur For Acne? Topical sulfur preparations are used principally for the symptomatic treatment of acne vulgaris.

Sulfur has antifungal, antibacterial, and keratolytic activity. When applied to skin, sulfur is thought to interact with cysteine, present in the stratum corneum, to form hydrogen sulfide. Hydrogen sulfide can break down keratin.

Sulfur also has comedolytic effects, helping to heal pre-existing comedones and preventing formation of new ones.

It is an old time antibiotic, one of the original compounds used in World War I. Sulfur powder was actually dusted on open wounds to prevent battlefield infection.

Adverse events are rare and mainly involve mild application site reactions. Sulfur, used alone or in combination with agents such as sodium sulfacetamide or salicylic acid, has demonstrated efficacy in the treatment of acne.

In clinical trials, lotions containing Sulsur 5% with sodium sulfacetamide 10% have been found to be very effective in reducing the number of inflammatory lesions and comedones, as well as reducing seborrhea.

You can find Sulfur in some over the counter acne treatments.
