Research is making progress in the fields of surgical glue, with the introduction of a new biocompatible adhesive that is activated by a laser

Adhesives offer several theoretical advantages over traditional suture thread, including: ease of application, elimination of the "signs" left by the suture, the immediate wound closure reducing the risk of infection.

A group of dermatologists of the Harvard University, directed by Robert Redmond, used for the construction of the new  glue,  a dye usually used in ophthalmology, the Rose Bengal.

An interesting property of Rose Bengal is to form strong bonds with the surrounding tissue when it is exposed to a green light. Thus becomes possible, by interposing a layer of dye between the two edges of a wound, using  a green laser to "weld" the lesion.

Redmond and his colleagues have so far tested only in experiments with animals, getting wound closure after about fifteen minutes of application of an argon laser at 514 nm.
The seal of the glue was twice that of currently available surgical glues, and also the safety of the product is  very good (the Rose Bengal has been used for decades in medicine, especially in ophthalmology, with no problems.

In the last few years, the new technique has been tested on restoring skin, ligaments and even blood vessels, nervous tissue and corneal repair. In most cases, in vitro studies were followed by promising studies on appropriate animal models.
