Aczone is a new acne treatment.
New acne treatment: Aczone is a topical gel formulation for the treatment of mild to moderate acne.
It uses Atrix's proprietary Solvent Microparticle (SMP(TM)) delivery system to deliver dapsone, a water-insoluble compound with anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial properties. Aczone was tested in two clinical trials with more than 3,000 acne patients aged 12 and older. It was compared with a similar gel without dapsone. Aczone fared better than the comparison gel. After three months, Aczone reduced more pimples. ACZONE® Gel is usually used on your affected skin twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening. Usage instructions: · Wash the areas of your skin where you will apply ACZONE® Gel. Gently pat your skin dry with a clean towel. · Apply a thin layer of ACZONE® Gel to the areas of your skin that have acne. A pea- sized amount of ACZONE® Gel will usually be enough. · Rub the medicine in gently and completely · Make sure to put the cap back on the ACZONE® Gel tube. Close it tightly and put the tube back in its original box. · Wash your hands after applying ACZONE® Gel. · Keep ACZONE® Gel away from your mouth and eyes. Do not swallow ACZONE® Gel. If you swallow ACZONE® Gel, call your doctor or poison control center right away. · If your acne does not get better after using ACZONE® for 12 weeks, talk to your doctor about other treatments for acne. The most common side effects of Aczone are dryness, redness, oiliness and peeling of the skin being treated. Aczone is in the FDA pregnancy category C. This means that it is not known whether it will be harmful to an unborn baby. Currently Aczone new acne treatment has a label restriction that requires patients to be screened to detect if they are predisposed to a type of anemia (hemolytic anemia) due to a deficiency in a specific enzyme, Glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD).
