Kojic acid for Hyperpigmentation

Kojic acid is a by-product of the fermentation process of malting rice for use in the manufacture of sake, Japanese rice wine. 

There is definitely convincing research,showing that kojic acid is effective for inhibiting melanin production. Kojic acid is highly effective in reducing the pigment in melasma patients.

 Melanocytes treated with kojic acid become nondendritic with a decreased melanin content. Additionally, it scavenges reactive oxygen species that are excessively released from cells or generated in tissue or blood. 

This acid has been found to be associated with contact allergy and has a high sensitizing potential. For this reason,it is commonly found in concentrations of 1%.

In a recent review, a reported study found that kojic acid and glycolic acid  in combination was reported to have the same efficacy in treating hyperpigmentation and melasma as hydroquinone and glycolic acid in combination.

The most common formulations for home use are creams and soaps. The easiest place to find Kojic products is in the skin-care section of a department store.
