Hyperpigmentation
Treatment
Hyperpigmentation treatment?
Hyperpigmentation is
usually associated with acne inflammation or other skin injuries.
In the simple terms, post inflammatory hyperpigmentation is a
red
or hyperpigmented mark left on the skin after an acne lesion has healed.
This
darkening occurs when an excess of
melanin, the brown pigment that produces normal skin color, forms
deposits in the skin. This is not a scar, but simply a
post-inflammatory change.

Only if a color change or skin defect is still present after 1 year, it
is considered to be a permanent acne scar.
An important step you can take to prevent dark marks from arising on
your skin is to use a sunscreen whenever you go outside. I recommend
you to re-apply the sunscreen as needed.
Hydroquinone is the ingredient most often prescribed and found in over
the counter skin treatments for hyperpigmentation. it is still
available in the USA in 2% concentrations for OTC products and in 4%
concentrations in prescription products.
Onother method used to treat hyperpigmentation is the shedding of the
top layers of the skin's surface through exfoliation
(microdermabrasion), or glycolic acid.
These methods increase your skin's sensitivity to the sun.
Therefore, you must wear sunscreen (SPF 15, minimum) every day and
limit sun exposure while treating hyperpigmentation.
Laser Treatments are very
expensive. Before choosing one of these, you must consult you doctor
and understand all the pros & cons in detail.
Topical agents such as Retin-A, organic kojic acid and
licorice extract have shown some
results in lightening dark spots on
the skin.
Kojic acid is revered worldwide for its skin-lightening abilities, and
is commonly used in topical formulations to treat dark spots. In a
recent review, a reported study found that kojic acid and glycolic acid
in combination was reported to have the same efficacy in treating
hyperpigmentation and melasma as hydroquinone and glycolic acid in
combination.
In many parts of the world, licorice extract is used to treat
hyperpigmentation, or the darkening of skin and nails due to high
levels of melanin.
