Blue light acne treatment?
Treatment of acne through blue light therapy is a gentle, non-invasive alternative to topical medications.TheFDA approved this treatment in August2002. The first approved system of treatment, ClearLight, is available through dermatologists. Patients are exposed to a blue light source for 15 minutes twice per week for 4 weeks. The cost for each treatment vary between $50 and $150 per session, making a full course of treatment an average of $800. Blue light for acne treatment is considered "cosmetic" and is not covered by insurance. The blue light used as a treatment for acne, kills p. acnes, the acne-causing bacteria. Patients sit or lie down during treatment, and a light source is placed close to their face for about 20 to 30 minutes. Most patients do not experience pain or discomfort during exposure to the light, and they can return to their normal routine immediately. Blue light acne treatment typically is repeated weekly for several weeks until optimal results are achieved. Some patients experience an improvement of their acne for several months but generally maintenance treatments are recommended for best results. The number of treatments vary depending on the severity of your acne.Patients who receive blue light acne treatment will also have the topical solution Levulan® applied to their skin for 15 to 60 minutes before light exposure.
