Antibiotics for Acne

Antibiotics for Acne and Scars?
Oral antibiotics are indicated as treatment for moderate acne that does not respond to topical treatments, such as benzoyl peroxide.

Oral antibiotics work by reducing Propionibacteria acnes (the bacteria responsible for acne breakouts). They also decrease inflammation of the skin.

The most common oral antibiotics prescribed for acne treatments are:

  • Erytromycin is used to treat or prevent a wide variety of bacterial infections. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria.

  • Tetracycline: this antibiotic treats only bacterial infections.Tetracycline works best when taken on an empty stomach 1 hour before or 2 hours after meals. Inform your doctor if your condition persists or worsens. Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects.

  • Minocycline

  • Doxycycline: it is best taken on an empty stomach with a full glass of water (8 ounces or 240 milliliters), 1 hour before or 2 hours after meals. Some manufacturers state it can be taken with food or milk if you develop an upset stomach, however doxycycline might be less effective if taken with food or milk.

  • Oral antibiotics cannot be prescribed to everyone due to a number of potential side effects, some serious.
One of the most serious side effects is the potential to cause severe birth defects in a developing fetus.
Other possible severe side effects that may occur include:

  • Pain in the chest or abdomen
  • Headache, blurred vision or dizziness
  • Joint pain
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea or rectal bleeding
  • Depression

  • If any side effect occurs, the patient's dermatologist or other healthcare practitioner should be contacted immediately.
