A significant increase in adult acne has been observed over the last several decades. Adult acne is characterized by the same type of pimples that mark the faces of youngsters.

Adult acne affects 25% of all adult men and 50% of adult women. Acne can occur at almost any age, and some people don't have skin problems until their 20s, 30s, or even later. Adult acne can be a condition with many contributing factors and as such may require an integrated approach.
Hormonal fluctuations associated with menstruation and menopause make women more susceptible to adult acne. Some women continue to have acne into their 40s and 50s. In some cases, teenage acne that persists into adulthood is complicated by the appearance of adult-onset acne.
In men with adult acne, lesions are more often seen on the chest and back. When it arises on the back, it's sometimes playfully called "backne."
