Laser Skin Resurfacing is an effective method of  some but not all shapes of acne scars. Acne scars can be improved or totally removed depending on how deep they are to start with.

For more serious scarring that does not respond to the non-ablative lasers, ablative lasers(acne scar laser resurfacing) may be the only option. These lasers have more downtime. They work by removing the outermost layers of skin. The two most common lasers in this category are the ErbiumYag laser and the CO2 laser.

Laser resurfacing works because it makes the acne scars less visible by vaporizing the surrounding skin (as in the case of CO2 and Erbium) and by stimulating collagen production which makes wrinkles less deep (as in the case of the CO2, Erbium). Because your skin is vaporized  it is like a true burn.  The deeper  acne scars, the more treatments you will need.

Laser Skin Resurfacing is  not suitable for dark, deep olive or Asian skins because of the risk of pigmentation complications in such people.

Also those who have very sensitive skin might not see the best results and can also suffer greater side effects. It is best to talk with your doctor the safety issues of laser resurfacing before seeking such acne treatment.

In the wrong hands, a laser can make the skin worse and cause permanent damage. In the right hands, it can significantly improve scars.

You would first begin by locating the different laser resurfacing doctors in your area and set up an initial consultation. This first meeting with the doctor will help you get a better understanding of the procedure that he or she will be performing.

The consultation with a good doctor is good time to ask all those questions  that you may have about the procedure. A complete candidness is required at this time since this can have a great affect on the overall success of your procedure. You should be ready to discuss why is it that you are considering this procedure and what you are trying to achieve.

It is important that the laser clinician takes a cautious approach and that the patient does not have unrealistic expectations of the outcome.
