![]() Some acne scars appear as holes, pits, or craters in the skin. This happen when the inflammation from healed acne causes destruction to the skin (similar to scars that often result from chickenpox). After the acne process has burned itself out, many young people are left with permanent scars, ranging from a few insignificant depressions to multiple large scars and deep "ice pick" holes. Acne Holes are acne scars that deepen into the reticular dermis and subcutaneous. These scars are usually found on cheeks. Often, an ice pick scar is very compacted, with more rigid walls than an ordinary acne pit. "Ice pick" scars are frequently helped by dermabrasion. This technique uses a motor-driven wire brush, planing away the surrounding skin, so, the acne scars and pits seem shallower and are less noticeable. Some scars are too deep to be planed by dermabrasion. These deep or "ice pick" scars may improved and closed with excision. This technique can be also used to remove isolated holes. "Ice pick" scars cannot usually be helped by collagen, but occasionally, fat injections can help. You can also get good results with much lower cost than laser treatment or dermabrasion, with a technique called Micro-dissection; this treatment consiste to remove the adhesions of the base of the scar on deep tissues. The treatment is much less aggressive as you can imagine. Possibly in the same session you can inject small amounts of hyaluronic acid under the scar. In this way you can obtain: Repeating the treatment at regular intervals according to the response of the skin, increases a progressive improvement of depressed scars, or crater-shaped holes. Then, if really necessary, you can perform treatments to smooth the skin and the edges of the scars with peeling or laser.
