Acne DietThis page is dedicated to Acne Diet.
![]() For several decades, the question of an association between diet and acne has remained unanswered. The medical community has concluded in the absence of compelling evidence that there is no association. All the same, the most important statement that I have read, and I believe this to be true is: "When body is functioning properly, and a certain level of health is reached, your acne will magically disappear". Good skin comes from the inside out, not the outside in! From my experience, my acne get worse when I consume certain foods and see dramatic positive change when I cut the same foods from my diet and when I follow a no-grain acne diet treatment. For instance, if I eat pizza (I love it) , during the following days, I see immediately some pimples appear on my face. I have researched many articles on the web about acne diet treatment and I have learned that eating refined carbohydrates and sugar leads to a surge of insulin and an insulin-like growth factor called IGF-1 in the body. This can lead to an excess of male hormones, which cause pores in the skin to secrete sebum, a greasy substance that attracts acne-promoting bacteria. Additionally, IGF-1 causes skin cells known as keratinocytes to multiply, a process that is associated with acne. Dr. Robyn N. Smith, from the RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia, and colleagues assessed acne symptoms in 43 male patients, between 15 and 25 years, who were randomly assigned to a low glycemic load acne diet treatment or a normal diet for 12 weeks. The acne diet treatment consisted of 25 percent energy from protein and 45 percent from low-glycemic-index carbohydrates. The findings are published in the July issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. The low-glycemic acne diet treatment was associated with a significant reduce in total acne compared with the normal diet. Study completed by the Australia's RMIT University and Royal Melbourne Hospital Department of Dermatology have discovered a "solid link" between diet and acne development. Researchers believe carbohydrates with a high glycemix index, which cause glucose and insulin levels to spike, may influence the development and severity of acne. Conversely, a diet high in protein and carbohydrates with a low glycemic index seemed to improve acne breakouts. Sugar raises insulin levels, which promotes the production of testosterone in women, and inflammation in general, causing acne. Glycemic index is a measure of how quickly a food causes blood sugar, or "glucose," to rise. Generally, foods with refined sugars and simple starches, like candy and white bread, have a high glycemic index, while those with more complex carbohydrates and greater fiber content, such as vegetables and whole grains, have a low glycemic index. The main reason for the success of this low glycemic acne diet is that it limited the rise in high insulin levels. Chronically high levels of insulin may lead to blockages in skin pores and extra oil building up under the skin. The following is a glycemic index foods list.

Exercise also helps improve insulin function. Also Nicholas Perricone, board-certified clinical and research dermatologist says "Acne is a systematic inflammatory disease". Through his studies and clinical experiences Dr. Perricone has discovered that it's cellular inflammation that cause many of the problems associated with aging, as well as many diseases, including acne. He says the key is to preventing this kind of inflammation is to eat a diet that has been designed to prevent a rapid rise in blood sugar. It is crucial to understand the relationship between the food we eat and its effect on blood sugar levels. Almost everyone is aware that eating sweet foods such as cookies, cakes, and candy will cause a rise in blood sugar. Unfortunately, a lot of people are not aware that many foods not considered sweets are also rapidly converted to sugar in the body. Just a few of these are bananas, potatoes, fruit juices, processed cereals, corn, peas, rice, pasta, bread--the list goes on. Once these foods are ingested, they act the same as sweet foods, causing a rapid rise in blood sugar, triggering an increase in insulin, resulting in inflammation on a cellular level. In addition to avoiding the proinflammatory foods, it is crucial to learn about the foods that have powerful anti-inflammatory activity. The essential fatty acids designated as the omega 3 have powerful anti-inflammatory activity. The following are my suggested guidelines to avoid skin inflammation: I recommend you Complete Omega 3-6-9, 120 softgels by Nordic Naturals To ensure ongoing quality, Nordic Naturals adheres to and exceeds the stringent Norwegian Medicinal Standard (NMS) and the European Pharmacopoeia Standard (EPS) for all products.
